Converting an English-Swedish Parallel Treebank to Universal Dependencies

The paper reports experiences of automatically converting the dependency analysis of the LinES English-Swedish parallel treebank to universal dependencies (UD). The most tangible result is a version of the treebank that actually employs the relations and parts-of-speech categories required by UD, and no other. It is also more complete in that punctuation marks have received dependencies, which is not the case in the original version. We discuss our method in the light of problems that arise from the desire to keep the syntactic analyses of a parallel treebank internally consistent, while available monolingual UD treebanks for English and Swedish diverge somewhat in their use of UD annotations. Functional Constraints in Knowledge-Based Natural Language Understanding

Many knowledge-based systems of semantic interpretation rely explicitly or implicitly on an assumption of structural isomorphy between syntactic and semantic objects, handling exceptions by ad hoc measures. In this paper I argue that constraint equations of the kind used in the LFG- (or PATR-)fornalisms provide a more general, and yet restricted formalism :in which not only isomorphic correspondences are expressible, but also many cases of non-isomorphic corre spendencee. I illustrate with treatments of idioms, speech act interpretation and discourse pragmatics
